AND THE ROLE OF KING ARTHUR WILL NOT BE PLAYED BY TIM CURRY THIS EVENING
Imagine our surprise! We bought tickets to see Monty Python's "Spamalot" on Broadway in NYC several months ago. We decided it would be nice to have one last weekend getaway before the baby comes, before I get too pregnant, etc. And I have to say, our weekend was absolutely perfect.
Except for the Tim Curry issue. I was disappointed about a month ago when I learned that Hank Azaria had permanently left the cast. Love Hank. Oh well, we'd still be seeing David Hyde Pierce and Tim Curry. Except that Tim's understudy performed in his place last night. I find it odd that an understudy would perform in a Saturday night performance, an evening that you would expect to have the biggest number of out of towners in for the show. Then again, perhaps it was unavoidable and he absolutely had some emergency reason for not doing the performance. It was certainly disappointing.
That being said, the show was still awesome and I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time. David Hyde Pierce was an absolute riot. We had so much fun.
Our weekend started Friday, when I left work at 3:30 to pick up Anthony at his office. We went to Foxwoods in Connecticut to see ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights." I have never been to a live boxing match in my life, but after last season's NBC show "The Contender" I thought I might enjoy it. It was very cool, and even though I was exhausted we made it through all six bouts. A few of the fights got pretty violent, but it was really exciting.
We stayed overnight at Foxwoods and got up at 6:00AM on Saturday to do some gambling, hoping the table limits would be lower at that hour in the day. They were, and after a little over an hour at a blackjack table we were both ahead. I had won $150 and Anthony had won over $300. We decided our luck may shift soon, so we hightailed it out of there before we ended up gambling it all back to the casino.
By 9:00AM we were back on the road to Manhattan. Let me tell you - nothing works at "getting me over" the whole fear of driving thing like a drive to and through New York City. I insisted on being the driver, and even though we hit a couple of hairy points - once on the FDR drive and once on 34th Street - I got us there in one piece and the new car survived!
Shopping on 5th Avenue was heavenly. Dinner was in Little Italy, as usual, and Anthony was in his glory, as usual.
And the show was really good.
All in all, a great weekend. I pushed it a little bit, and I am really tired (I can't do everthing I used to, now that I am 6 months pregnant!), but it was a lot of fun and Anthony and I really needed the time together.
It would have been perfect, if not for Tim Curry!
